This page contains answers to common questions handled by our support staff, along with some tips and tricks that we have found useful and presented here as questions.

Note: In these answers we will follow a few shorthand conventions for describing user-interface procedures. Key combinations will be presented like this: Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which means that you should press and hold down the Control key, the Alt key, and the Delete key at the same time. Menu selections will be presented like this: File->Open, which means that you should open the File menu, and then make the Open selection.

Where can I find information on windows xp security problems?

The single best source is microsoft.com.  Be sure you check and install the most recent updates from Microsoft.

Why does my connection light flicker even though I'm not doing anything?

The answer is that it could be several things. You may have some spy ware reporting on your web movements, but most likely, someone is scanning your machine.  Go to analogx and down load their jammer program to see for sure.  Jammer is FREE.

What kind of internet connection is best?

Modem connections are limited to 56K (read that 50K max) unless you use a ISDN connection.  ISDN allows two concurrent 64 K connections with a 16 K dialer line ( called 2b + d)  if a router is used, your throughput will come close to 128 K.  The problem has to do with billing.  When your router receives a ping from the network ( say AT&T) it will respond to the ping by answering.  The billing service will sometimes bill you for 30 seconds of line time.  One of our clients had $30,000.00 in one month that resulted from this kind on inadvertent connections.  What a mess.

Satellite offers the only solution for areas without cable or DSL.  The only downside is the latency problem with signals going 22,500 miles up and 22,500 miles down, pretty soon you have a delay even at the speed of light.  However, throughput is quite good, often in the 384 K range.

DSL and cable probably offer the best over all service.  Equipment cost are reasonable and speeds are superior to anything short owning your personal T1 line.   DSL offers up to 1.54 MHz downlink with 384 kHz uplink.

Can you answer questions on programming in Visual Basic, PHP and Access?

Yes, If you can describe the condition, we will get an answer for you.  We may have other questions so expect an E-Mail or Private Message for more details.

How do you charge for development of database applications ?

The simple answer is, our rate is $40.00 per hour.  Before we go beyond an analysis of the project, we give you a project breakdown.  This includes:

bulletWhat we will do.
bulletHow much time it will take.
bulletHow much it will cost.

Even if we make a mistake on the required work hours, it will not cost you one dime more.  Also, remember we are able to reuse our existing code and we past the savings on to you.

Can our MIS dept work on the same project to reduce our cost?

Absolutely.  Remember our goal is to reduce the cost as much as possible.  We do not charge for work your MIS dept. can contribute to the project.

We use a Microsoft SQL database on a MS 2000 server.  What can we do to increase company access at peak load times?

Obviously, there can be other issues, but for the following reasons we would probably recommend splitting the database into a table database which might have a few populated tables and a data only database.  The populated tables included in the table database would be only those not referenced often (like Company information).

Reasons are:

  1. Speed of access.  Data transferred over a local network generally have a transfer speed of 100 MB instead of the less than 1MB of most DSL's.  Even allowing for local traffic, real time improvements of several orders of magnitude are common.
  2. Security.  In today's world of hackers, data received by a local area network in an encrypted format and stored on LAN servers help reduce exposure to Internet mischief.  If customer data and transaction information is stored on the IIS, each time a query is sent, data interception is possible.

Do you sell customer information to anyone else?

No!!  We do not sell or transfer your data to anyone else.  We use advertising on this site to help defray the maintenance expense, but we do not share your data with anyone.

We use a software firewall.  Will this keep hackers out?

While almost any defense can be broached by someone with enough time and determination, a hardwire firewall is far superior to a software firewall.

In order to disable a software firewall, a hacker only has to stop the process running on your machine.  Several programs designed to do just this are available for free on the web.  These programs work, and they are fast.  They even replace the icon in your system tray so you want know you've been compromised.

Software firewalls are fine if you are modem connected and the connections are not left unattended, and the information exposed is not critical.  Otherwise, caveat emptor...

How do we get Ladatahost hosting?

Sign up at out account setup page.  We provide a series of options to fit your needs and if you have custom requests, you can submit them in our Forum or request a private quote.

Why is the price so low?

As prices for bandwidth decrease, so do hosting prices.  We are affiliated with other companies who share the cost of maintaining servers and switches for hosting.  This 'purchase in volume', allows us to be very competitive on rates and service.  We aren't the cheapest either because the market we target will need help from time to time.

Not just help to get setup, but help with coding, security and even help getting better positions in search engines.  Because these things cost money, we charge a little more.

After we sign up, what's next?

You will receive a notice acknowledging your sign-up.  Next, an e-mail will notify you of the IP addresses and the name servers to use.  It is your responsibility to purchase your Domain Name and to change the DNS or name servers to the correct settings.  If you have any questions on doing this, use our forum to get help.  We will also give you a temporary FTP address to upload you web site to.  Remember, the home or main page should be named index.htm or index.html.

After about 48 hours, the new DNS information should have propagated over the web and you can access your web at yourdomain.com ( or net, biz etc. ).  You will also be given an address to access your cPanel.  cPanel contains the management tools for the website.  Here you will setup your e-mail addresses, view web statistics, setup FTP addresses and add on tools such as shopping carts, forums, chat rooms and other additions available. We must stress, sometimes it takes more than 48 hours.  This is handled by the DNS providers and they update twice a day.

In cPanel, at the bottom of each page is a Documentation link to specific information on all items listed in cPanel.  This includes setting up shopping carts etc.  Please read this information first, and then if you don't understand it or if you have problems, fire them at the forum board.
